
If you live near the 401, a streetcar line, a school, or just a busy Toronto arterial, you’ve probably wondered whether new windows would make the house quieter. They can, sometimes dramatically. But the standard energy-efficient window most people buy is not automatically a quiet one, and the salesperson’s “triple-pane is best for noise” is only half right. Here’s what actually blocks sound.
The Number to Ask For: STC
Sound Transmission Class rates how much airborne sound a window blocks, from about 18 for a thin single pane up to 45+ for specialty acoustic units. Every 10 points is roughly a halving of perceived loudness; 3 points is about the smallest change most people can notice. Typical values:

Not every manufacturer publishes STC for every unit, but the good ones do, and a quote for a noise-driven project should list it.
What Actually Reduces Noise
Four things, in order of effectiveness: mass (thicker glass), damping (a laminated interlayer that stops the glass ringing), decoupling (a wider air space between panes, and panes of different thicknesses so they don’t resonate at the same frequency), and air sealing (sound leaks through the same gaps air does). A window that scores well combines several.
Laminated Glass: The Best Bang for the Buck
Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded with a plastic (PVB) interlayer, the same construction as a car windshield. The interlayer absorbs vibration across the frequency range, especially the low, rumbling traffic frequencies that ordinary glass passes straight through. Swapping one pane of a standard double-pane unit for a laminated pane typically adds 5 to 8 STC points, which is a bigger improvement than going from double to triple pane, at lower cost and weight. It also adds security and UV blocking. For most noise problems, a double-pane unit with one laminated pane, thicker than the other, is the right answer.
Triple-Pane: Better, But Not for the Reason You Think
Triple-pane adds mass and one more air space, and it does help, typically 3 to 5 STC points over double-pane. But three panes of the same thickness resonate together, and the air spaces in a triple-pane unit are narrow, so the gain is smaller than people expect. If noise is the goal, a triple-pane with one laminated pane is excellent. A standard triple-pane bought for noise alone is often a disappointment.

Window Style and Installation
Casements and fixed windows outperform sliders and hung windows for sound for the same reason they do for air: the compression seal closes the gaps. The installation matters as much as the glass. A high-STC window foamed loosely into an unsealed opening leaks sound around the frame. Insist on full perimeter foam, backer rod, and sealant inside and out. Full-frame installation seals better than retrofit here.
Realistic Expectations
Going from old single-pane or leaky double-pane windows (STC low 20s) to laminated double-pane (STC mid to high 30s) is a 10 to 15 point improvement. That’s the difference between hearing every truck and hearing a muffled hum, and it’s the kind of change people describe as “a different house.” Going from decent double-pane (STC 30) to standard triple-pane (STC 34) is noticeable but modest. No window makes a house on a highway silent; the goal is to get traffic below the level of normal conversation and out of your sleep.
Cost
Laminated glass adds roughly 15 to 30 percent to the price of a window over standard double-pane, depending on size and thickness. Triple-pane adds 10 to 20 percent; laminated triple-pane, 30 to 45 percent. Because the street-facing wall is usually the only one that needs it, most homeowners upgrade the front windows only and use standard glass elsewhere, which keeps the whole-house premium small.
What Else Lets Noise In
- The front door. A hollow or poorly weatherstripped door with a mail slot is often louder than any window.
- Wall vents, dryer vents, and through-wall air conditioners.
- Old aluminum sliders on the porch or sunroom.
- Uninsulated wall cavities in older homes; the wall itself may be the weakest link once windows are upgraded.
